Small lines, big leaks
- The water line by itself
- Plus odd jobs
Appliance water lines run behind machines where nobody looks. A cracked plastic fridge line or a burst rubber washer hose can release a lot of water before anyone notices. The fix is usually simple: replace old plastic or rubber with braided stainless lines, and give each appliance its own quarter-turn shutoff.

Refrigerator and ice maker lines
Many older ice maker lines are thin plastic or copper tubing fed by a saddle valve clamped onto a cold pipe. Saddle valves leak over time. We replace them with a proper shutoff where the supply allows, and run a braided line to the fridge with enough slack for pulling the fridge out. We check the connection at the fridge inlet valve and flush the line before connecting a new filter.

Washer hoses and boxes
Rubber washer hoses become brittle with age and heat. Braided hoses are more burst-resistant. We replace hoses, rebuild or replace leaking washer valves in the wall box, and check that the drain hose is secured in the standpipe so it cannot pop out during a spin.
Signs of trouble
- Water on the floor near the fridge or washer.
- Ice maker making small or hollow cubes, or none.
- Clicking from the fridge water valve.
- Washer filling slowly.
- Swelling or soft spots in the floor near the machine.
- Faucets, toilets and valves
- Traps and drain connections
- Water heaters on existing lines
- Disposals and supply lines
- Moving or adding pipe runs
- Sewer and main drain work
- Repiping and new gas lines
- Slab leaks
What is outside our scope
Running a new water line to a fridge across the house, moving a laundry box, and repairs inside the appliance are outside our scope.
Checking a line after it is reconnected
After a refrigerator line is reconnected, run the water dispenser for a few minutes to push out air and loose particles, and throw away the first batches of ice. Wipe the fitting at the wall and at the back of the fridge with a dry paper towel later that day and again the next morning; a slow weep shows as a damp spot long before it makes a puddle. When pushing the fridge back, leave a loose loop of line behind it rather than a kink.

Choosing the right line
Fridge lines come in braided stainless with fittings on both ends, in PEX, and in copper or plastic tubing. Braided lines with factory crimped ends are the most forgiving: they flex when the fridge moves and the connections are not field-made. Measure from the shutoff to the fridge inlet and add enough slack to pull the fridge out about two feet for cleaning.
Copper tubing works but kinks if bent too tight and can work-harden and crack if the fridge is moved often. Thin plastic tubing becomes brittle and is the line we replace most.

Washer hoses come in standard lengths with female hose threads on both ends. Use new rubber washers in each end, and do not overtighten; a snug turn past hand tight is enough. Many makers recommend periodic hose replacement in their manuals, so check yours.
- Fridge ice line: look for kinks or a white crack
- Washer hoses: bulges or rust at the ends
- Shutoff valves: do they turn by hand?
- Floor: soft spots or stains behind the units
- Saddle valves clamped onto a pipe
- Room to pull the machine out safely
Washer drain and the standpipe
A washer drain hose hooked loosely over a laundry sink can whip out during a spin. A standpipe with the hose secured by a clip or strap, at the height the washer maker lists, prevents that. A standpipe that overflows during the drain cycle can mean a partial clog in the line below it, often from lint. We clear the trap and accessible line.

Leak sensors and auto-shutoffs
Battery water sensors placed on the floor behind the fridge, washer, water heater and under sinks sound an alarm or send a phone notice when they get wet. Some washer hose kits include automatic shutoff valves that close if a hose bursts. They are inexpensive extras that can save a floor, and we can place them while the appliance is out.
Why it matters
EPA WaterSense lists leaking valves among the common household leaks and says that "the average household's leaks can account for more than 9,300 gallons of water wasted every year." Appliance lines that drip behind machines are among the hardest to notice.
- Shut it offTurn the valve under the fixture clockwise, or the main valve.
- Relieve pressureOpen a faucet nearby so the line drains.
- Contain itTowels and a bucket; unplug anything wet.

More questions about appliance lines
Why does my fridge water taste odd after a line change? New lines and filters can leave air and a plastic taste for the first few gallons. Run several glasses of water through the dispenser and discard the first batches of ice.
Can the fridge line come off the kitchen sink supply? Often, yes. A dual-outlet stop under the sink can feed both the faucet and a line to the fridge when the fridge is close by.

Is a washer pan worth it? On second floors or over finished rooms, a pan with a drain connection catches small leaks. Without a drain, a pan only holds a small amount, so pair it with a water sensor.
What about the dishwasher line? The same rule applies: a braided line on a working stop. We check it whenever the sink cabinet is open.

Before we arrive
Empty the bottom shelf of the fridge door if it holds heavy jars, clear a path to pull the fridge forward, and move items stored on top of the washer. If the floor behind the appliance is wet, leave the area open to dry and send a photo so we can judge whether the subfloor needs attention too.

Questions we get
- A neighbor works too
- Keys for the water line visit
How long does a washer hose last?
Rubber hoses age with heat and pressure. Braided replacements are an inexpensive upgrade.
Can you remove a saddle valve?
Yes, and install a proper shutoff when the pipe allows.
My ice maker stopped. Is it the line?
Sometimes. Check that the shutoff is open and the line is not kinked. If the inlet valve or ice maker has failed, that repair is outside our scope.

- The water line quote holds
Do you move the fridge?
We can pull it out carefully to reach the line.
Why does my fridge water line freeze?
The freezer may be set too cold, the line may pass near a cold vent, or a slow fill valve lets water sit. We check the line and the inlet valve.
Why is my refrigerator water line leaking?
Usually a loose compression nut, a cracked plastic line or a worn shutoff. Swapping to a braided line with fresh fittings solves most of them.
- Parts for the water line, priced first
- Bought one? Fine
Why is my refrigerator water not flowing?
A kinked line, a closed or clogged shutoff, a frozen section or an overdue filter can each stop the flow. We check them in that order.
Where is the shutoff for the ice maker line?
Usually under the kitchen sink, behind the fridge or in the basement or crawl space, where the small line tees off a cold pipe.
What size is an ice maker water line?
Most are 1/4-inch tubing. Braided lines with matching fittings are common replacements for old plastic or copper tubing.

- Ring us about the water line
Why is the ice maker line shaking?
A fast-closing inlet valve causes water hammer in the line. Securing the tubing and checking the inlet valve usually settles it.
