Start with a walk-through

Buying safety rail parts
  • Parts for the safety rail, priced first
  • Bought one? Fine

The most useful changes depend on how a person moves through the house. We walk through with the person and the family, watch the path from bed to bathroom, from the front door to the kitchen, and up and down any steps. Then we suggest a short list, starting with the changes that prevent the most common falls. Nothing gets installed without your OK.

Bathrooms

Bathrooms are where many falls happen. Grab bars at the tub or shower entry and beside the toilet give a solid hand hold. A handheld shower on a slide bar lets someone sit while bathing.

A raised toilet seat and a non-slip mat help too. See grab bar installation.

  2. Right hardwareLag into wood or use anchors rated for it.

  4. Check the holdPull on it before you trust it.

Steps and entries

Short runs of steps at the front and back door often have no rail. A rail on one or both sides helps every time someone goes in or out with groceries. We also look at thresholds that catch toes, doors that are heavy to open, and lighting at the entry. A motion light at the door helps after dark; see outdoor lighting.

Handles, switches and reach

Lever door handles are easier than knobs for arthritic hands. Lighted switches are easier to find at night. Pull-down closet rods, lower shelves and drawer pulls instead of small knobs put daily items within reach without step stools. See lever handles.

Lighting

Older eyes need more light and are more sensitive to glare. Brighter, even light in halls, stairs and bathrooms, plus plug-in motion night lights along the path to the bathroom, reduce falls at night. We swap fixtures on existing boxes; see light fixture replacement.

Trip hazards

Loose rugs, cords across walkways, a lifted floor tile, a loose stair tread and clutter in halls cause many falls. We secure rugs or suggest removing them, route cords along walls, fix lifted tiles and loose treads, and suggest small changes to furniture placement.

Working with families

Adult children often coordinate from another city. We can text photos and a list to the family, schedule visits around a parent’s routine, and work patiently and respectfully in the home. We speak English, Mandarin and Cantonese, which many families here appreciate.

Bedrooms

The bedroom is where the night path starts. A lamp or a touch light within reach of the bed, a clear path to the door, and a motion night light in the hall help most. Beds that are too low or too high make standing up harder; risers or a lower frame can help. Bed rails are a medical device question for a doctor or therapist, not a handyman.

Kitchens

Heavy pots and daily dishes belong on lower shelves, between waist and shoulder height. Pull-out shelves in lower cabinets avoid kneeling. Brighter under-cabinet lights make cutting and reading labels easier; see our under-cabinet lighting page.

  • Hardware, trim and assembly
Outside our scope
  • Structural framing changes
  • Roofing and foundations
  • New openings in walls
  • Whole-room rebuilds

Smoke and CO alarms

Alarms that chirp from a high ceiling are a hazard for an older adult who tries to climb a chair. We replace batteries, swap old units, and can install alarms with ten-year sealed batteries so nobody needs to climb for years.

Room-by-room safety check
  • Entry: a light at the door and a rail at any steps
  • Halls: night lights and no loose rugs
  • Bathroom: grab bars at the tub and toilet
  • Bedroom: a lamp reachable from the bed
  • Kitchen: everyday items at counter height
  • Stairs: rails on both sides and good light

Phones and doorbells

A video doorbell lets someone see who is at the door without walking to it, and family can see too. A louder chime or a flashing chime helps with hearing loss. See our doorbell page.

Stairs inside the house

Two-story homes with a single rail benefit from a second rail on the other side. Contrasting tape on the edge of each step helps eyes judge depth.

One step at a time

Changes do not have to happen all at once. Many families start with the bathroom and the entry, then add more as needs change.

Outdoors

Uneven walkways, loose pavers and slick steps cause falls outside. We can reset a few loose pavers, add non-slip treads to wood steps, trim plants that crowd a path and add a light at the garage side door. Bigger concrete or grading work is not work we take on. A clear, lit path from the car to the door matters as much as anything inside.

Garage entries

The step from the garage into the house is often steep, with no rail. A short rail there is a quick fix.

Medication and kitchen safety

Stove knob covers and auto shutoff devices help people with memory changes. A medicine cabinet with good light and a magnifier nearby helps read labels. These are small changes that families often ask about after a scare. We install the devices and can explain how they work to everyone in the household.

Visiting caregivers

If a caregiver visits, a lockbox for a spare key and a working doorbell help them get in without the person rushing to the door. We can install a lockbox on a wall or a door handle.

Costs

Most safety updates are small jobs. A short list of grab bars, rails and lighting often fits into one visit, quoted up front.
